Non-Linear Script - A non-linear movie is a film which doesnt keep a consecutive storyline; this includes events not occurring in chronological order. Therefore is is sequential or straightforward to the audience.
Linear Script - A linear movie consists of the movie staying in chronological order, which keeps the original storyline, without any surprise change change of plot.
Symbolic - A series of scenes which objects are used to symbolise the order of events.
An example of a non-linear script would be Sinister. We can see this quite clearly in the opening sequence as it starts off with four people being hanged, they haven't given us a storyline so it is unclear to the audience with what is happening. This gives confusion to the audience because all you can see is a clip of people being killed.
Another example of a non-linear script would be the second film of Saw. The opening sequence includes a man being trapped inside a room where he doesn't know where he is. With this scene being the start of the film it makes the audience confused because they will want to know what had happened before the man got taken into this room, and also intrigued on how the key got in his eye.
An example of a linear script would be The Woman in Black. This consists of three vulnerable girls playing with their china dolls and diner set. Followed by them being over-ruled by someone or something which is controlling them, making them do as they wish. This then continues on to them standing on, and breaking their personal possessions. Throughout this opening scene the audience is curious as to who/what they are looking at and why they would want three young girls to jump out of a window. The final, crucial part to this opening scene is where we see a woman figure on the bottom right of the screen. We then get an idea as to what the film is about.
An example of a symbolic script would be The Conjuring. This consists of different elements which symbolize the main prospect of the movie. This includes the girls leg being dragged, representing another unseen presence. Furthermore, throughout the film there are mainly continuous occurrences that present and explain the constant disturbance and super natural disasters on the family.
