What is google trends?
Google Trends is a public web facility of Google inc. based on Google search. It shows how often a particular term is entered into google, relative to the total search across various regions of the world; in various languages. Also throughout a specific amount of time. It is also possible to refine the main graph by region and time period. It's possible to question up to five words or topics simultaneously in Google Trends. Results are displayed in a graph that Google calls a "Search Volume Index" graph. The horizontal axis of the main graph represents time, and the vertical is how often a term is searched, globally. Below the main graph, popularity is broken down by: countries, regions, cities and language. However, it only displays the combined searches from all countries that share a specific language. The vast amount of searches on google trends whereby trillions take place every year, make Google Trends one of the world’s largest real time datasets. Examining what people search for provides a unique perspective on what they are currently interested in and curious about. It is also an unbiased sample of our Google search data. It’s anonymised: where no one is personally identified, categorised: determining the topic for a search query, and aggregated:grouped together. This allows us to measure interest in a particular topic across search, from around the globe, right down to city-level geography. As well as all this, google trends also allows you to compare two different or similar events which occurred at different times.

The screenshot of google trends on the left was used to show the amount of searches about Asylum in the UK. We chose this because at one point it peaked, so those searching for this will be interested in our OTS. The screenshot of google trends on the right was used to show the amount of searches of Prisons in the UK. Evidently, these searches are lower than the searches of asylums.
